Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Print media has long served as a platform for advocating social change, including the empowerment of women. In Gombe LGA, Gombe State, print media outlets such as newspapers and magazines have been instrumental in raising awareness about women's rights, promoting education, and advocating for gender equality. Articles, editorials, and special reports in print media provide in-depth analysis of issues such as access to education, healthcare, and participation in decision-making processes (Aliyu & Musa, 2023). Despite the growing popularity of digital media, print media remains a reliable source of information in many parts of Gombe LGA, especially among older populations and rural communities. This study examines the extent to which print media contributes to empowering women and identifies areas for improvement in its advocacy efforts.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While print media in Gombe LGA has contributed to advocating for women's empowerment, challenges such as limited readership, inadequate representation of women's issues, and cultural barriers hinder its effectiveness. Furthermore, the dominance of patriarchal norms in media narratives often undermines efforts to promote gender equality. This study explores the strengths and limitations of print media in empowering women in Gombe LGA, offering recommendations for enhanced advocacy.
